I only suck my thumb when I am in bed, alone at night. I find nothing sexual or arousing about it. Just a relaxation technique for me that works well. My parents think that I quit along time ago. My current boyfriend has caught me, and I think that he finds it disturbing. I have had a boyfriend in the past who it was a turn on for, and I immediately made sure that I didn't do it in front of him because A) I didn't really like him B) For me, it's like I said, it is a relaxation thing for me. It's all about me. The physical reprocussions: My front teeth are good. I do wonder if I don't have an oral fixation because I smoke more than anyone should. I have very strong jaw muscles. To the point that I can't chew gum, and I have had more than one dentist tell me that I have to use a childs tooth brush because I can't open my mouth enough to use an adult tooth brush. As far as the stuffed animal part, I prefer pillow case corners. I suck my left thumb (I am a right hander). I like to rub it around my nose and mouth. When I was a baby, I had a blanket with fringe that I would rub all over my face and my grandmother took it away from me to break my thumbsucking habit. Love the woman, but I don't think that I will ever forgive her for that. So baby girl, you are not alone by any means... I know that this post is old. but here goes. ….

Even admitting this is making me feel uncomfortable. I am married with 2 children. My husband knows and accepts it as do my children. I feel very guilty when I do it, and find myself doing it more often than I ever used to. I have tried to stop...oh how I have tried, even cutting up my pillow ( a small piece of one that I hold when I suck my thumb). My parents tried everything to get me to stop, including pepper, Off! spray and bribing me with gifts. Nothing has worked. I feel more addicted to it than anything in my life and cannot go a day without it, not to mention trying to sleep without doing it....yet the guilt and embarrassment I feel about doing it is making me miserable. I have high self esteem and self respect, and I thoroughly love the feeling of 'release' I get when I suck my thumb. I do it while I watch tv, work, drive, sleep, read, write.....it is non stop. A large part of me wishes I could stop, but the same size part of me does not. I don't know if i want advise or just a means to voice something I have held a secret for my entire life and carried the guilt for for just as long. But I realised that there are plenty of other people meassed up depending on drugs alchohal and ciggeretes for comfort and that is far worse than adult thumb sucking. And to be honest if I'm utterly exhauset and falling asleep in my chair when I need to remain awake there is nothing that works better than sucking my thumb to give me a boost, make me feel better and wake me up. I love sucking my thumbs and intend to do it until at least my 80s, it's a far better habit than stimulants. For a while I almost gave up thumbsucjking when I was 25, I thought that it meant I had psychological problems. There are about 5 or 6 people who are close family and friends who know I suck my thumb and that is it. I suck my thumb every day. Most of the time it's just at night but there are days when I'm so tired that I find myself sucking my thumb at work or in the car I manage to hide it though, and if you know it's because I've let you into my very close circle of friends. It's not even that I mind people knowing, it has no reflection on my personality, it is just something I do when I'm tired to either settle me to sleep or to wake me up when I'm falling asleep at work. When I met my boyfriend I didn't tell him for 6 months but when he found out he said it's really common, he'd had at least 3 previous girldgriends doing the same thing and he thought it was cute. No ones ever asked me if I sucked my thumb, so I'm not incl. in any statisitics, but I'd say 10% of the female population do it. That's just based on p-eople I've spotted doing it. It's hard to remember everything you want to say in your first post... Anyway, I'm 19 now, and I'm sucking more openly in the car, depending on the traffic. The woman in the passenger seat was staring away! Though she was wearing sunglasses so I couldn't see exactly where she was looking... Though I bet it was at me!
